Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Program
Merit-Based Safety Recognition for the Merit Shop!
Established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety Committee, STEP was developed and written by contractors, for contractors. There is no charge for this service (unless you are applying for STEP Diamond or Platinum), and your responses are strictly confidential.
Why Join STEP?
- Provides a 20-point guide for starting, updating, or auditing a company-wide safety program.
- Combines lagging indicator data with leading indicator use and self-assessment for a holistic view.
- Designed to benefit both large and small contractors.
- Members receive recognition at both National and Chapter levels, with events throughout the year.
- STEP Diamond and Platinum recipients can compete for the ABC National Safety Excellence Award and the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) - CISE award.
- Data shows participants outperforming BLS national averages in all safety metrics, benefiting pre-bid/bid processes and insurance rate negotiations.
ABC’s STEP Safety Management System provides a robust, no-cost framework for measuring safety data and benchmarking with industry peers. It helps participants identify real growth opportunities in their safety programs to lower total recordable incident rates.
There are six levels of STEP achievement: Participant, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Participants can opt-out of public recognition if preferred.
Who Should Complete the STEP Submission?
ABC encourages engaging as many employees as possible in the STEP submission process to ensure a comprehensive safety program assessment. Safety committees or diverse employee samples can help achieve this.
