The construction industry is facing a turning point. For every five skilled tradesmen who retire, only two apprentices are training to take their place. By 2025, the industry will need to attract more than 439,000 new workers just to keep pace with demand – a gap that threatens to slow projects, raise costs, and stall progress nationwide.
But where some see a challenge, others should see an opportunity. Construction careers today offer competitive wages, clear advancement pathways, and the chance to build a future without the burden of student loan debt.
At a time when many Americans are struggling with rising costs and uncertain job markets, the trades stand out as one of the most reliable, rewarding, and future-proof career choices available.
A workforce in demand
The workforce shortage is both urgent and long-term. In 2026, demand for construction workers is expected to rise even higher, requiring nearly half a million new professionals as projects expand in response to lower interest rates and renewed infrastructure investment.
At the same time, the average construction worker is 42 years old, which means many in today’s workforce are closer to retirement than the start of their careers.
Without bold solutions, this gap will only grow wider. For younger workers, career changers, and parents guiding the next generation, this shortage represents an unprecedented chance to step into a career that offers stability and growth from day one.
A career without debt
One of the biggest advantages of construction careers is how accessible they are compared to other professions. While college remains the traditional route for many young people, it often comes with a significant financial burden. In the U.S. today, more than 43 million adults hold over $1.7 trillion in student loan debt – a weight that can delay milestones like homeownership, family planning, or retirement savings.
Construction offers a different path. Through apprenticeships, individuals can earn while they learn – receiving paid, on-the-job training while building the skills they need to succeed. By the time they finish an apprenticeship, many are already positioned for leadership roles, without a cent of student loan debt. And the payoff is strong, as the average starting salary after an apprenticeship is $77,000, compared to the U.S. average wage of $65,470 across all occupations.
Building safety and productivity
A construction career is not only about wages – building safely and sustainably also is top priority. Safety is the foundation of productivity, and companies that prioritize it see measurable benefits via 21% higher profits and 17% greater productivity than those without strong safety programs.
At ABC West Tennessee, we take safety seriously. Our Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) program provides a proven, no-cost framework for contractors to strengthen their safety culture. Participants in STEP outperform industry averages across all metrics, with top-tier companies achieving incident rates 658% safer than the national average. For workers, that means peace of mind. For employers, it means stronger teams, fewer delays, and more competitive bids.
Training the next generation
ABC West Tennessee is committed to bridging the workforce gap by preparing the next generation of construction leaders. Our NCCER-accredited apprenticeship programs span 12 trades, from carpentry and plumbing to HVAC and heavy equipment operation. These programs can also be tailored to reflect each company’s values and methods, ensuring apprentices learn the company way from the start.
Why it matters now
Construction is one of the few industries that allows you to start earning immediately, advance based on merit, and see the tangible results of your work in the communities you serve. It offers stability in uncertain times and provides the skills to build a lifelong career.
As the demand for skilled workers grows, careers in construction are essential. They are the key to keeping projects on track, communities growing, and the economy moving forward.
This October, as we celebrate Careers in Construction Month, ABC West Tennessee is proud to stand behind the people who build our future – and to invite the next generation to join them.
